This penetrating portrait of a prominent man wearing a striking, gold-coloured cap has long been attributed to the Augsburg master Hans Burgkmair I. Although not by him, the drawing was created in that city, and is related to a painted portrait in the Staatsgalerie in Stuttgart. Later overpainting on the picture makes it difficult to determine the exact relationship between the two works.
