Rembrandt depicts the dramatic moment when Mary Magdalene recognizes the man who addressed her at the empty grave: it is not the gardener, as she first thought, but her Master who stands before her. She almost collapses when she realizes that he has risen from the dead. Christ implores her not to touch him (‘Noli me tangere’); he no longer belongs to the mortal world.
