In the past there were wooden landings along the banks of the Moldau River where it flowed through Prague’s town centre. Using a lever, the inhabitants could draw buckets of clean water from these landings. The water nearer the bank was polluted by sludge and waste. The outline of the Prague Fortress can be vaguely discerned in the left distance.
