For Neptune’s resting arm, the painter Salviati was here inspired by the right arm of Michelangelo’s statue Night. An illustration of this sculpture on Lorenzo de’ Medici’s tomb in Florence is also on view in this gallery. Other sketches also show just how closely Salviati studied Michelangelo’s sculptures. In this drawing he experimented with the pose of Neptune’s hand.
