This ill-tempered looking creature belongs to a species of small, clawed monkeys found in the Amazon region. The artist most likely drew it from a mounted specimen, which according to an annotation on the verso of the drawing was in the collection of the Rotterdam-Dordrecht merchant Pieter Havart. The refined execution – notice the tiny hairs of the fur – is almost equal to that of his successful teacher Aert Schouman.
