This is a fine example of a new type of painting, known as the fête galante or courtship party, which was developed in Paris shortly after 1710. No specific story is depicted. Elegantly dressed men and women converse, play music and flirt, always in an outdoor setting. Pater was one of the leading specialists of this new genre.
