Joachim Patinir is considered one of the founders of landscape painting. He is chiefly famous for his ‘world landscapes’ in which a usually religious scene is subordinate to the panoramic surroundings. Here the hermit Anthony walks to a small lake to fetch water. Along the way, all sorts of monstrous creatures try to tempt him into abandoning his humble and pious life.
