Apollonio di Giovanni was one of the most prominent cassone specialists in Florence. Cassoni (chests) were often produced in pairs, mostly on the occasion of marriages, with depictions of heroic deeds. Here, the Persian ruler Darius is shown going to battle against Alexander the Great.
