Ter Borch probably depicted his half-sister Gesina ter Borch here. She, too, was an artist, and frequently modelled for him. In the 17th century, her appearance, with her gathered plaits and a red hairband, would immediately identify her as an unmarried country girl. She is holding a printed sheet of paper, from which she briefly glances up.
