The province of Pernambuco, conquered by the Dutch, was home to a diverse population. Post distinguishes the various groups through the depiction of their distinct costumes. In the foreground, for instance, we see indigenous inhabitants dressed in white attire. Walking towards the veranda is a couple wearing European clothing, and a veiled woman and an African man carrying a basket on his head stand at the fence.
