Thérèse Schwartze was the most sought-after portraitist of Dutch 19th-century high society. Yet the portraits she painted of those closest to her were her favourites. This likeness of her niece and fellow artist Lizzy Ansingh is one of her best works. The strong contrast between light and dark creates an intimate atmosphere. At the same time, the energetic brushwork and fiery red accent on the bright green in her clothes exude a powerful aura.
