Johanna le Gillon had herself portrayed holding a lute, her favourite instrument, showcasing her exceptional musical talent. The famous composer Constantijn Huygens sent her all manner of musical pieces for the lute. The portrait is still in its original gilt limewood frame, lavishly adorned with putti (cherubs) collecting roses, lush golden vines, and garlands. The fitting motto in the cartouche at the bottom reads: ‘A contented heart leads to great talent’.
