Landscape with a Sandy Path
- Date
- c. 1655
- Medium
- canvas, oil paint (paint)
- Institution
- Rijksmuseum
Philips Wouwerman is known primarily as a horse painter, yet he also painted landscapes. In the 1650s his landscapes became grander and the figures in them smaller. The travellers in this panoramic view walk along a sandy path and wade through the water. The silvery light lends the landscape a southern, Italianate atmosphere. Yet Wouwerman probably never visited Italy.
