Frans van Riel, a painter and printmaker born and schooled in Italy, earned his reputation as a portraitist in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Van Riel established a photographic studio, the Galería de Arte, in the capital city. In 1918 he co-founded *Augusta,* a journal dedicated to reviewing various art forms, including dance.
