The new LinkedCulture topic cluster on European decorative watches pulls together pieces from the Rijksmuseum, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Met, spanning the 17th to 19th century.
The range is remarkable. A cruciform rock crystal watch from 1640s Amsterdam. An engraved egg watch from 1590s Germany. A coach watch built for the road. A chatelaine watch worn at the waist. And my favourite title in any museum database: the Rijksmuseum's "Repeating Watch with Ladies Sacrificing a Dove on the Altar of Love," c. 1750.
These weren't just timekeeping devices. They were status objects, gifts, miniature paintings, jewellery, and demonstrations of what European goldsmithing and enamelwork could do at its peak.
