Pottery vessels with a footed stand such as this one is the earliest known high-fired ware. Its gray color is the result of the reduction of oxygen in the closed kiln chamber. Footed vessels were not for everyday usage, but rather served to present offerings to the deceased. A series of triangular cutouts shown on the bottom are standard features of Kaya pottery.
