Ranbir Singha (1830-1885) was a Pahari raja and son of the founder of the Jammu and Kashmir state, which he ruled for almost 30 years. He established a modern judicial code and a silk factory in his state and was a scholar of the Sanskrit and Persian languages. One of his four sons—it is not known which one—sits beside him for this portrait. Anchoring the center of this oval composition is the maharaja, resplendent in richly embroidered robes and jewels and wearing a sword and a dagger.
