According to traditional Chinese beliefs, great mountains are mysterious and possibly dangerous realms, inhabited by deities as well as ghosts and monsters. This painting shows Zhong Kui, the demon-tamer deity, traveling throughout his domain in order to eliminate any evil beings he might encounter along the way. Holding an umbrella as protection from the sun, he rides in a sedan chair carried by three demons he has conquered. China, Asia
