The pomegranates represent vigorous fertility because of the fruit's numerous seeds--a pun implying sons. The image in art, therefore, is imbued with a good wish for numerous offspring. The playful poem reads: While eating pearl-like pomegranate seeds I also throw the seeds at sparrows I painted this at age 83. China, Asia
