The ding vessel originated from a pottery prototype dating to the Peiligang culture of the Neolithic period (c. 7000–5000 bce). In bronze examples, legs shaped like stylized dragons eventually took the form of birds—here, birds standing on their claws and tails. Above the legs runs a band of cicadas, symbols of renewal and rebirth. China, Asia
