The bulbous form of this jia wine vessel was popular from the late Shang to early Western Zhou periods. An inscription beneath the handle reads, “Duke of Quan made this precious vessel for his late father, ” identifying a clan active in present-day Henan. Jia vessels, used for heating wine, were among the earliest Chinese bronzes but declined in use after the early Western Zhou, making this well-preserved example especially significant. China, Asia
